2024 AFTK ACT Seminar: Uniting Martial Arts Traditions in Canberra

The first Australasian Federation of Traditional Karate & Kobudo (AFTK) seminar of 2024 was a resounding success. Held at Kodokan Cummings Karate Dojo in Mitchell on Sunday, 3 March 2024, the event drew over 40 enthusiastic participants from members and non-members alike, representing various martial arts disciplines, including karate, kobudo, taekwondo, and more.

The seminar featured a meticulously curated program consisting of three immersive 1.5-hour sessions, each led by distinguished instructors revered within the martial arts community. The day commenced with an enlightening session by Adam Ball Sensei of Kenbukan Australia, who skillfully delved into the nuanced application of kata across different ranges, providing attendees with invaluable insights into the practical aspects of traditional karate techniques.

Continuing the momentum, our very own Ben Brillante Sensei, proudly representing Goshukan Karate Academy ACT, took centre stage to explore the art of flow sparring. Brillante Sensei's session seamlessly connected kata with self-defence principles, captivating participants with his innovative teaching methods and emphasizing the fluidity and adaptability inherent in martial arts practice.

The seminar reached its peak with a masterful session by Reece Cummings Sensei of Kodokan Cummings Karate Dojo, who delved into the intricacies of Saijutsu. Through his expertise, attendees discovered how to infuse function into form, bridging the gap between traditional martial arts and modern applications.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all the presenters, participants, and organizers whose dedication and support contributed to the resounding success of this seminar. Their commitment to fostering camaraderie and excellence within the martial arts community is commendable, and we look forward to continuing our collaborative journey of growth and discovery together.
