Goshukan Karate Academy Opens Its Doors in Phillip, ACT

The journey of Goshukan Karate Academy has reached an exciting new milestone: the opening of our brand-new dojo in Phillip, ACT! For years, we’ve nurtured a strong community of martial artists, united by a passion for karate and personal growth. Now, this new space allows us to take that commitment even further, offering a dedicated, purpose-built facility where students of all ages can thrive.

Building a Home for Karate in Phillip

The idea of opening a full-time dojo has been a dream in the making. After months of planning, designing, and hard work, our vision has come to life in Phillip. Stepping into the new dojo, you can feel the energy and potential. With over 160 square-metres training space, 6-foot mirrors lining the walls, and modern amenities like lockers and changing rooms, this dojo is more than a training centre—it’s a hub for learning, discipline, and community.

This dojo is a place where students can master their stances in front of the mirrors, perfect their kata under expert guidance, and work together to build skills that go far beyond karate.

Reflecting on Our Journey in Canberra

We began our Goshukan Karate Academy journey in Canberra on 5 February 2021, teaching classes in the Forrest, Narrabundah, and Griffith ACT area. Over the past few years, we’ve grown into a thriving karate family, welcoming students of all ages to share in the traditions of martial arts.

Our classes in the Forrest dojo will continue to run on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, while the new Phillip dojo will host classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. This expansion ensures that we can provide even more opportunities for students to train and grow.

A Space That Reflects Our Values

Karate is more than punches and kicks. It’s about discipline, perseverance, and respect—and these values have shaped every corner of the new dojo. The bright, open layout fosters focus and concentration, while the thoughtful design ensures safety for every student, from young children taking their first steps into karate to adults refining their advanced techniques.

The dojo is also a reflection of our commitment to the Phillip and Woden communities. Positioned at the heart of these vibrant neighbourhoods, it’s easily accessible for families looking to join a karate school that prioritises tradition, excellence, and inclusivity.

      Sensei Ben is an incredible teacher, always providing guidance and encouragement to his students. My son has been going to his classes for the last one year and loves it! The atmosphere in the classes is friendly and inclusive. With a number of classes to choose from, sessions by the lake in summer and clear progression through the different levels, karate with Sensei Ben is teaching my son the value of discipline and the importance of showing up.       Every since my granddaughter  started Karate at Goshukan Academy her confidence has become more positive she loves  getting up on Saturday  getting ready for more learning  her inspiration is so much better now thank you for teaching her how to become a better person

      It's been a great karate journey for my kids, learning discipline, self-defence, or what's left and what's right, and building confidence and fitness. All important life skills for kids. It's a great environment to start karate. Highly recommended.

      I have been practicing Karate with my son at this dojo for over a year and have enjoyed every single bit of it.  Sensei Ben and Justin have been always good at what they are doing and are very helpful teachers. The content of classes is designed well and the class is well paced. The assistant teachers are attentive and nice. I reckon the mix classes on Monday and Friday nights are the best for families!  I find it a good opportunity to get exercise myself and a chance to show commitment and hard work to my child instead of talking about it. Happy to recommend this place to any family.

      Ben Brillante and his team are great teachers and very supportive.  It is a very friendly dojo where all students and black belts know each other.  Coffee after training on a Saturday morning is always a great chat!  People of all ages from small kids up are welcome.  Everything you learn is always explained about how it can be applied in a practical way for self defence.  I am one of the oldest students and have only been training for about 6 months.  I am feeling far fitter and more flexible and would highly recommend Goshukan Karate Academy!!!
