Reflections on a Journey to Okinawa: A Deepened Passion for Karate

Returning to Canberra after an enriching experience in Okinawa, Japan last week (11 - 19 August 2024), Ben Sensei is filled with a deep sense of learning and growth. The journey was marked by moments that deepened his passion for karate and reinforced the beauty of the shared path within the Goshukan community.

Training Highlights

The time spent in Okinawa was nothing short of transformative. Delving into the essence of karate—body mechanics, posture correction, and breathing techniques—offered a fresh perspective that refined strength and technique in unexpected ways. Immersing in traditional Okinawan training methods provided invaluable insights that Ben Sensei is eager to share with everyone at the dojo.

One of the most significant experiences was participating in a Kata seminar at the Okinawa Prefectural Budokan with the Japan Karate Federation, Gojukai Technical Committee. The focus on perfecting kata movements, understanding the principles behind them, and connecting with the spirit that animates every move was truly enlightening. These insights will greatly enhance the exploration of the technical and philosophical aspects of karate in future dojo sessions.

Competition Highlights

The 50th JKF GojuKai All Japan Karatedo Championships was awe-inspiring, showcasing mastery and dedication that transcend age. Special congratulations go to Chief Instructor Stacey Karetsian Shihan, who made history by securing 3rd place in the 50+ Division—a remarkable achievement in a highly competitive field of over 40 participants. Roderick Martin Shihan also displayed extraordinary skill and determination, finishing strong in the finals. The Australian team embodied incredible spirit, stepping up to the challenge and proving that they are a formidable force on the world stage. Witnessing world champions like Kakeru Nishiyama and Hikaru Ono was a humbling reminder of the heights that all karate practitioners can aspire to reach.

Special Moments

Another highlight was the privilege of visiting the legendary Tetsuhiro Hokama Sensei at his dojo. Exploring Hokama Sensei's karate museum was an enriching experience, filled with history and wisdom. Ben Sensei was deeply honoured to receive two calligraphy scrolls from him—one reading "Goshukan Karate" for the dojo, and the other, "Keizoku wa chikara nari," translating to "Continuance is power, persistence is strength." These words resonate deeply with the journey that everyone at the dojo is on, reminding them that every step, no matter how small, brings them closer to mastery.

Looking Ahead

Ben Sensei returns from Okinawa with a renewed sense of purpose, a wealth of knowledge, and cherished memories. The laughter, camaraderie, and shared experiences with Goshukan buddies and fellow karatekas from around the world have strengthened the resolve to continue this journey together. As these experiences are integrated into the dojo’s training, there is confidence that the Goshukan community will grow stronger, not just as karate practitioners, but as a united community driven by shared passion and persistence.

Let this journey continue with determination and the unwavering belief that with every challenge overcome, everyone grows closer to becoming the best versions of themselves.

      Sensei Ben is an incredible teacher, always providing guidance and encouragement to his students. My son has been going to his classes for the last one year and loves it! The atmosphere in the classes is friendly and inclusive. With a number of classes to choose from, sessions by the lake in summer and clear progression through the different levels, karate with Sensei Ben is teaching my son the value of discipline and the importance of showing up.       Every since my granddaughter  started Karate at Goshukan Academy her confidence has become more positive she loves  getting up on Saturday  getting ready for more learning  her inspiration is so much better now thank you for teaching her how to become a better person

      It's been a great karate journey for my kids, learning discipline, self-defence, or what's left and what's right, and building confidence and fitness. All important life skills for kids. It's a great environment to start karate. Highly recommended.

      I have been practicing Karate with my son at this dojo for over a year and have enjoyed every single bit of it.  Sensei Ben and Justin have been always good at what they are doing and are very helpful teachers. The content of classes is designed well and the class is well paced. The assistant teachers are attentive and nice. I reckon the mix classes on Monday and Friday nights are the best for families!  I find it a good opportunity to get exercise myself and a chance to show commitment and hard work to my child instead of talking about it. Happy to recommend this place to any family.

      Ben Brillante and his team are great teachers and very supportive.  It is a very friendly dojo where all students and black belts know each other.  Coffee after training on a Saturday morning is always a great chat!  People of all ages from small kids up are welcome.  Everything you learn is always explained about how it can be applied in a practical way for self defence.  I am one of the oldest students and have only been training for about 6 months.  I am feeling far fitter and more flexible and would highly recommend Goshukan Karate Academy!!!

      I have trained with Sensei Ben on multiple occasions, and each time he has shown to be a proficient practitioner and competent instructor. I encourage anyone in the area to consider his dojo. Context: I am not a student, but another martial arts school owner.

      Exceptional Karate Dojo Transforming Lives! We've been part of Goshukan Karate Academy for nearly a year now, and the positive impact it has had on my daughter's life is truly remarkable. Sensei Ben is not just an expert in karate but also an outstanding mentor who exudes professionalism in every aspect. Under his guidance, my daughter has not only honed her physical strength and self-defence skills but has also experienced a significant boost in confidence.
